LA SED ADULT EDUCATION
EMPOWERING OUR YOUTH
I MADE THIS TEXT UP AS AN EXAMPLE:
La SED Inc. is deeply committed to empowering the Latino community of Southwest Detroit through accessible, culturally responsive language and citizenship education. Our comprehensive ESL Program equips non-native English speakers with practical communication skills tailored to daily life, work, and U.S. citizenship preparation. In parallel, the Citizenship Program provides personalized support, including mock interviews and civics instruction, to guide lawful permanent residents confidently through the naturalization process. Together, these initiatives reflect La SED’s dedication to fostering integration, opportunity, and civic empowerment for immigrant families.
ESL PROGRAM FOR NON-NATIVE ENGLISH SPEAKERS
The LA SED ESL Program is designed to address the specific language needs of the Latino community, focusing on practical English skills necessary for daily life and U.S. citizenship. We offer three levels of English as a Second Language (ESL) courses: Absolute Beginning English (ABE), Beginning English (ESL-1), and Intermediate English (ESL-2). The program is tailored to the diverse Latino community in Southwest Detroit, which includes individuals from various countries in North and South America with limited formal education and different native dialects.
– Absolute Beginning English (ABE): Taught entirely in Spanish, this course introduces basic English concepts, focusing on speaking, listening, reading, and writing in everyday situations. By the end of the course, students will be able to reproduce English sounds, use basic vocabulary, and engage in simple conversations for everyday needs.
– Beginning English (ESL-1): This course builds on ABE by expanding vocabulary and grammar within a practical context. Grammar is explained in Spanish, but students are encouraged to communicate primarily in English. Students will improve their conversational skills and explore U.S. culture and societal norms.
– Intermediate English (ESL-2): Conducted entirely in English, this course refines language skills and prepares students for more complex communication in social, work, and citizenship contexts. The course emphasizes listening, speaking, reading, writing, and grammar, and helps students prepare for the U.S. citizenship naturalization interview.
– Build confidence in speaking, listening, reading, and writing in English.
– Prepare for the U.S. citizenship interview and test.
– Learn practical English for everyday life and work.
– Develop a deeper understanding of American culture.
– Receive personalized instruction based on your proficiency level.
The LA SED ESL Program is committed to empowering individuals through language education, supporting their integration into American society, and helping them achieve U.S. citizenship.

– English Language Proficiency: Applicants will gain the necessary skills to read, write, and speak everyday English, which is a requirement for U.S. citizenship.
– U.S. History and Government: We provide thorough instruction on the principles of U.S. history and government to help applicants pass the civics portion of the naturalization test.
– Mock Interviews: Emphasis is placed on preparing for the citizenship interview through realistic mock interview sessions, enabling participants to build confidence and familiarity with the process.
The Citizenship Program runs year-round, with sessions beginning in mid-January and concluding in mid-December. Participants can choose from two enrollment options:
